Brussels' focal point is its stunning Grand Place, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to splendid baroque guild halls. The ornate buildings around the Grand Place are superb venues for sampling local beers and specialities such as waterzooi, a creamy-rich fish stew.

For art lovers Brussels is awash with museums. If you are a fan of surrealism, discover the brilliant works by Magritte in the Museum of Fine Arts, where famous old masters by Rubens and Breugel are also housed. One of the most fun museums is the Belgian Comic Strip Centre, housed in a fantastic Art Nouveau warehouse, which includes displays on Tintin.

Admire the grand architecture of the Galeries Saint-Hubert, a covered shopping arcade dating from 1847. Alternatively, stroll down the Avenue Louise for the finest designer shopping, and if antiques are on your list, be sure to visit the weekend market at the Place du Sablon.
