There are an endless number of attractive coastal and inland resorts including Royan, the islands of Ile de Ré and Ile d’Oléron, Rochefort and Saintes. La Rochelle is a great place for a day trip, a short break or something a little longer. One of La Rochelle’s highlights is the picturesque old harbour, also a great place to sample fresh seafood and other local products. Across the bridge is the chic island resort of Ile de Ré, approx 30km long and famous for its sandy beaches and traditional oyster farming. St Martin de Ré is the capital, an attractive fishing port surrounded by stone, whitewashed houses. Other towns include La Flotte and Ars-en-Ré. The Ile d’Oléron is Frances largest island after Corsica and is popular with both day-trippers and holidaymakers alike. The island is also home to Le Marais aux Oiseaux, a superb breeding centre for hundreds of rare and endangered bird species. At the mouth of the Gironde estuary, Royan is located 77km south of La Rochelle and has some of the finest beaches in the region. The town of Rochefort was built up around a 17th century military harbour and its main tourist attraction is probably the Centre International de la Mer. Saintes dates back to Roman times and some of the ruins can still be seen. The town centre is typically attractive with medieval houses and narrow cobbled streets.
