The Somme bay is the largest estuary in Northern France and is rich with wild birds, flowers and dunes. There is a small steam train that runs from Le Crotoy to Cayeux-sur-Mer which really is one of the best ways to discover the region. Amiens lies 120km north of Paris and is worthy of a visit if nothing more than for the cathedral, the tallest is France and proudly displays a variety of ornate sculptures. A golfers paradise with over 21 courses to choose from, many only an hour’s drive from Calais, popular courses include Golf d’Abbeville, Golf de Chantilly and Golf de Nampont-Saint-Martin. There are 4500km of inland waterways in addition to the superb Picardy coastline making canoeing and kayaking a popular choice for water sport enthusiasts. The vast sand dunes, endless forests and wide-open spaces make for some of the best terrain to enjoy horse riding, or for those who simply fancy something a little quieter, there is a network of well-maintained footpaths throughout the region. The Marquenterre Dunes take you past sand dunes and marshes and in contrast the Forest of Crécy en Ponthieu is the largest forest in the Somme with the old battlefield just a few kilometres away.
