There are no major cities in the area, but miles of beautiful landscapes, medieval villages and spectacular castles. Probably one of the most famous villages in the Dordogne is Sarlat-la-Canéda, a beautiful example of 15th and 16th Century architecture with a bustling, pedestrianised ‘vielle ville’. Just 30km north of Sarlat near the pretty village of Montignac in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac are the world famous Lascaux Caves. Originally discovered in 1940, a second cave of exact copies using the same materials and techniques was opened to the public. Steeped in history, no visit to the Dordogne would be complete without a visit to one of the hundreds of castles or ‘Chateaux’ in the region. The Chateau de Beynac stands proudly above the Dordogne river. Visitors to the Chateau can explore the dungeons and living quarters and experience the superb views across the countryside. Possibly one of the most popular castles in the South-west of France is the Chateau de Castelnaud which has seen many a bloody battle over the centuries and has a superb array of medieval armoury on show. One of the larger towns in the area, Bergerac is located on the northern side of the river. Its main attraction is the vielle ville, an attractive mix of half-timbered houses and friendly cafés. An important crop, tobacco is widely grown here and Bergerac houses the National Tobacco Museum. The Dordogne is home to the official ‘most beautiful villages in France’ and the village of La Roque Gageac (8km south of Sarlat is no exception). A true example of a picture postcard, the village attracts scores of tourists each year. The narrow, cobbled streets, riverside houses jostling for position over the river and the hill leading through a tropical garden and up towards the troglodyte caves.
