The Northern part of Languedoc-Roussillon incorporates the historical towns of Nimes and Uzes with the seaside resorts of Sète and Cap d’Agde. The South and its exciting landscape and scenery includes the well-known fortress town of Carcassonne, the Canal du Midi and the lively towns of Narbonne and Pepignan. Le Cap d’Agde is a popular beach resort located 71km from Montpellier and is made up of ten different districts. Le Port is the lively heart of the town with its busy quayside and small squares surrounded by shops. There is a large, sandy beach at Richelieu with many water sports and activities on offer. Just 90km South-east of Toulouse is Europe’s largest fortified citadel – Carcassonne. The town is divided into two areas, Cité de Carcassonne and Ville Basse (the lower city) and from a distance could be mistaken for something from a fairy-tale. Most interesting of course is the walled part of the town, which oozes history, wind your way hrough the cobbled streets, all lined with shops selling everything from jewellery to artwork and handmade trinkets.
